Solid state lighting (SSL) products, more commonly known as LEDs, are gaining wide acceptance due to their advantages of long life, robust construction, instant light and the promise of energy savings. However LEDs, like all other electrical products, must comply with the appropriate safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), energy efficiency and trade practices requirements.

Energy efficient lighting in houses, townhouses and units in Queensland [17]
The Queensland Government recently approved a range of energy efficiency requirements, in-cluding new requirements for lighting. The QDC MP4.1 Sustainable Buildings requirements came into effect on 1 March 2009 and apply only in Queensland.

LED technology is developing rapidly. As a consequence we are likely to see considerably more LED applications in the near future. Unfortunately not all LED product matches suppliers' claims and purchases need to be cautious. Nevertheless there is some excellent LED technology available from reputable suppliers and new applications are being developed and refind both in Australia and overseas. This edition of Light Technical provides an introduction to LEDs and lists some of the technology's lighting applications.

Retrofitting Fluorescent Luminaires to Improve Energy Performance [15]
Most fluorescent lighting in Australia is provided by T8(25mm diameter) tubes operating with a magnetic ballast. Renewing, refurbishing or retrofitting fluorescent luminaires is usually done to achieve a new outcome. This may be for aesthetic reasons, to improve the lighting or to reduce energy consumption.
